Houston Food Bank Fundraiser!

Updated: Jan 4, 2021

This post is all about supporting one of my students, who I just learned has planned and created a baking fundraiser for the Houston Food Bank's Backpack Buddies Program!

Yesterday in our timed writing class, students were practicing writing classic STAAR and college application essays. One middle school student chose this prompt:

"Tell us your story. What unique opportunities or (and) challenges have you experienced throughout your high school career that have shaped who you are today?"

This is a current essay prompt for Texas colleges. Here is what the student wrote:

"So of course I’m not in high school, but this is something that happened pretty recently and I think really helped (and is still helping) me.

A month ago, due to Corona, I realised that many kids from all ages were going hungry. Turns out, a lot of kids who come from poor families are starving because they don't have access to cheap or free school lunches. My mom and I did a little digging on Google and found the Backpack Buddy program. It is a program by the Houston Food Bank that donates food to kids of all ages from relatively poor families. They help many kids and their families by giving them canned foods like meat, stock, pasta, fruit and vegetables! I had an idea to open my own online bakery that donated 100% of our revenue to the food bank to support their cause. I had plenty of experience and I was only going to sell to friends and neighbors. So, I emailed the food bank and talked to their organization and got myself a fundraiser page. I created my website for my bakery and started selling. Just in a month, I’ve made $57 for the food bank and just so my customers feel assured that all of their money goes to the cause, I have them pay by directly donating to the fundraiser page under the name they ordered by. This is only my second month selling and I’ve made a lot of progress! For October, I’m selling a chiffon pumpkin cake roll and I have 12 orders so far! Using the money that I made, the food bank can buy extra supplies and food for the many kids whose families can’t support them. It's really nice that I get to bake while supporting a cause that I care about. I took the course and test for the certification for the Cottage Food Law and really like helping and supporting other kids like me!"

Such articulate writing! And what a great way to combine the hobby she enjoys with an opportunity to help others. So, maybe you are in the delivery area and would like to order some goodies, or maybe you'd prefer to donate to the fundraiser without edible compensation, Either way, please show your support for a caring young lady and her cause :)
